Networking Global Communication in and Beyond the Age of Social Media
Conference co-sponsored聽with Media@不良研究所

In his 2016 book聽Marconi, 不良研究所 Professor Emeritus Marc Raboy made the case for attending to the relationship between mediated communication and social transformations since the mid-nineteenth century, seeing the evolution of our communication system as a layered process of continuity and change. This conference responds to Raboy鈥檚 call for more historically informed analyses of global and networked communication. It foregrounds the interrelated roles of media governance, institutions, and movements for social change. Featuring contributions from Darin Barney (不良研究所), Greg Taylor (University of Calgary), Arne Hintz (Cardiff University), Claudia Padovani (University of Padova), Jeremy Shtern (Ryerson University), and Erol Salamon (University of Minnesota) among others, this conference will present panels on four topics: 鈥淭hinking about Globally Networked Communication,鈥 鈥淢edia Governance and Policy,鈥 鈥淚nstitutions of Public Media,鈥 and 鈥淪ocial Movements and Media Messages: Qu茅bec and Beyond.鈥 Papers presented at this conference will be published as聽The聽Handbook of Global Media Policy Research聽in the International Association for Media and Communication Research鈥檚 series with Palgrave.

Networking Global Communication in and Beyond the Age of Social Media聽/ 芦La communication mondiale en r茅seaux 脿 l鈥櫭╮e des m茅dias sociaux et au-del脿禄 is being organized to commemorate the work and influence of recently retired AHCS Professor Marc Raboy by a group of former graduate students and colleagues he has mentored and worked with. In the tradition of academic聽, the invited speakers will present relatively short (8-10 min), informal, programmatic and personal talks that focus on the key questions related to these themes. These reflections will be tied to their own work, reflect on Marc鈥檚 contributions, and include personal and collegial wishes on the occasion of his retirement as well. An impressive group of international speakers has been assembled (please see the attached schedule).

Any members of the 不良研究所 community who wish to attend are more than welcome, registration is free (and lunch is provided) but space is limited, so please reserve a place at the Eventbrite link below.
