Canadian steel and aluminum producers still heavily reliant on US buyers
During the first Trump administration, the US imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum. And though those tariffs were lifted, they鈥檙e doing it again. Even though Canadian producers had more than four years to diversify their clientele, they remain heavily reliant on the US market. One reason is that the Canadian and American supply chains are so intertwined that it鈥檚 difficult and time consuming for Canadian producers to uncouple from the US market, according to Vivek Astvansh, an Associate Professor of Quantitative Marketing and Analytics at 不良研究所 Desautels. 鈥淭here is also inertia in Canadian producers, trade associations and governments from actually acting on this threat,鈥 Astvansh told CTV News. 鈥淭hey also might not have anticipated that there would be more tariffs after a new US president was elected in 2020.鈥
