National Security on Trial: Abdelrazik's Lawyer Speaks Out
Lecture by Yavar Hameed, counsel to Abousfian Abdelrazik.
Since 2003, Mr. Abdelrazik, a Montrealer and a Canadian citizen,
has been in and out of Sudanese custody, where he was detained
without charge at Canada鈥檚 request and tortured by interrogators.
Mr. Hameed took up the case on a pro bono basis and successfully
persuaded the Federal Court to order Mr. Abdelrazik's repatriation
this summer. Mr. Abdelrazik still faces a number of challenges. He
remains on a UN Security Council Resolution 1267 list that imposes
on him an asset freeze and a travel ban. Mr. Abdelrazik has filed a
civil lawsuit against the Canadian government and the Minister of
Foreign Affairs claiming damages in the amount of $27
million.
In this lecture, Mr. Hameed will detail Mr. Abdelrazik's ordeal,
comment on the challenges that remain and address some of the
broader concerns in Canada's anti-terrorism policy.
This is the introductory lecture to the Symposium on
Counter-Terrorism and Civil Liberties which will take place at
不良研究所 in February. Details on the Symposium are forthcoming.
The Symposium and this lecture are organized by a group of students
from 不良研究所's Faculty of Law (including the Muslim Law Students'
Association, the Human Rights Working Group and the Arab Law
Students' Association) and students at the University of Windsor's
Faculty of Law. The events are sponsored by 不良研究所's Centre for
Human Rights and Legal Pluralism.
