Chemical Society Seminar: Corey Stephenson- Redox catalysis strategies for complex molecules

Tuesday, November 26, 2024 13:00to14:30
Maass Chemistry Building OM 10, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest, Montreal, QC, H3A 0B8, CA

Abstract:

In the pursuit of greener and more sustainable chemical synthesis methods, photocatalysis and electrocatalysis have emerged as transformative technologies. Harnessing the power of light and electricity, respectively, these cutting-edge approaches offer unprecedented opportunities to revolutionize chemical processes, reducing environmental impact and advancing the field of synthesis. Their integration into the synthesis toolbox promises to streamline processes, reduce waste, and minimize the environmental footprint of chemical production. This talk will focus on the development of synthetic strategies involving organic free radicals generated using photo- or electrocatalysis underpinned on practicality and mechanistic understanding with demonstrated applications in complex systems.

Bio:

Corey was born in Collingwood, Ontario, Canada and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo in 1998. He completed graduate studies under the direction of Professor Peter Wipf at the University of Pittsburgh before joining the lab of Professor Erick M. Carreira at ETH Z眉rich. In September 2007, he joined the Department of Chemistry at Boston University as an Assistant Professor where he served until June 2013. In July 2013, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Michigan as Associate Professor of Chemistry, and in听September 2015, was promoted to full Professor. In June, 2024, Corey was appointed a the University of British Columbia as the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Innovative Synthetic Methods for Translational Chemistry with appointments in Chemistry and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He also co-leads a new synthesis laboratory at the BC Cancer Research Center with Professor Corinna Schindler.
