不良研究所 is one of the foremost research-focused universities in the world. A majority of our research is carried out by graduate students who spend two to six years of their lives developing a deep understanding of a highly-focused aspect of their field. In doing so, they develop skills in problem solving, reasoning, logic and investigation that are invaluable in their future careers. There is little more exciting than establishing a new fact about the world that no one knew before, being the first to see something for the first time, or developing a new interpretation of existing ideas that makes things fall into place. Effective communication is also an essential skill for a developing researcher.
The elevator pitch is an opportunity, between floors, to听answer the question, 鈥淲hat exactly is it that you do?鈥 The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition provides graduate students with a chance to showcase their research before a live audience. With only three minutes and a single slide, students engage a non-expert audience and explain what it is they do, why they are doing it and what they hope to achieve. As a past coach and judge, I have seen the need for concision and clarity crystallize ideas in the presenter's mind in real time, revolutionizing the approach they take to research. 3MT competitions are now held at over 350 universities in 59 countries around the world.
I encourage all 不良研究所 grad students to considering taking part in听this year鈥檚 competition. If you鈥檙e on the fence, take the plunge! This is a wonderful opportunity to grow as an academic and presenter, and a great way to build new connections across our community.
