Dentistry, and Truth Reconciliation

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.听In honour of this day, the Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences will be host the hybrid event Dentistry and Truth and Reconciliation听on Thursday,听September 29 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 2001 不良研究所 College Avenue, suite 100, room 102. Two students in the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program, Janelle Brown-Walkus and Georgia Limniatis, will shed light on the history of oral health care and Indigenous persons in Canada.听

Janelle Brown-Walkus, DMD'26, is a member of the Squamish, Heiltsuk, and Kwakwa瘫ka瘫始wakw First Nations. She has been a facilitator in dialogues surrounding Indigenous healthcare and education and is a strong encourager of others on this learning path. Janelle plans to work in Indigenous communities and to advocate to close the oral health gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations.

Georgia Limniatis, DMD'26, strives to make healthcare and health research more inclusive and accessible for Indigenous people and is working with the Qu茅bec SPOR Support Unit Indigenous Health Care branch to achieve these goals. She recently co-authored an on the flaws in the mandatory indigenous cultural training program for workers in Quebec's health care network.听
