Bertrand LEBOUCH脡, MD, PhD, has established a multidisciplinary research team and drawn on a multidisciplinary model of care with a patient-oriented perspective. Four main axes characterize his contributions:
1. Optimizing ART and HIV care with patient-oriented research (2012-22)
B. Lebouch茅鈥檚 current research interests centre on how to improve HIV care/prevention, particularly, by meaningfully involving patients in research. Towards this goal, he is leading a research program the I-Score Study, involving investigators from across Canada and France, to develop, validate and implement a new electronically administered patient-reported outcome measure (e-PROM) for routine HIV care. This e-PROM will serve to detect and help manage barriers to antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence that are relevant to both patients and clinicians (Aids care 2018). To this end, and to ensure the PRO鈥檚 utility and use, B. Lebouch茅鈥檚 research program integrates regular consultations with stakeholder groups, most intensively with patients and health care providers, thanks to patient engagement agent and research assistant David Lessard, PhD. There has been several publications on stakeholder engagement in the I-Score Study (Health Pol Tech 2017, Qual Life Res 2018, Aids Care 2018, Health Expect. 2019). The new e-PROM is currently undergoing validity testing (JMIR Res. Protocol, 2019). With his research associate Kim Engler, PhD, they published reviews on PROM in HIV (Patient 2017, J Patient Rep Outcomes, 2019) and they are regularly consulted as experts for use of PROM in HIV care.
2. Developing a new app for HIV care (2019-2025): To administer electronically this e-PROM, a patient-conceived smartphone app (Opal) (JMIR, 2019), in use at the Cedars Cancer Centre of the 不良研究所 Health Centre (MUHC), will be adapted for HIV care. This app has just received the 鈥淐oup de Coeur des ministres鈥 from Quebec鈥檚 R茅seau de la sant茅 et des services sociaux. It offers patients several important functions, including access to some of their medical data, appointment check-in, and PROMs completion. The routine administration of the e-PROM with the app and the sharing of its results with the physician, they expect, will help guide adherence-related discussions to address issues of importance to patients and limit the impact of adherence barriers. Ultimately, this PROM is expected to improve patient and service outcomes
3. Academic mentorship in patient-oriented research: B. Lebouch茅 holds a Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) Chair in Innovative Clinical Trials awarded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (2017-2022), in recognition of his commitment to patient engagement, multidisciplinary approach, dynamic training program, and access to an impressive network of relevant experts who are co-mentors of the Chair. As a part of the mentorship provided, both a patient advisory committee and a multidisciplinary knowledge user committee regularly offer trainees feedback on their work to help ensure its relevance. This multidisciplinary program has also an important mentoring and training role for 2 Master鈥檚, 5 PhD and 1 post-doctoral student (Aids Care, 2019).
B. Lebouch茅 is assisted in his research by K. Engler, MA (sexology), PhD (public health) and D. Lessard, PhD (anthropology). K. Engler has extensive experience in all facets of health-related quality of life research from conception to publication and is currently working on the development of the I-Score e-PROM. D. Lessard has worked with different marginalized communities and through his leadership in the I-Score鈥檚 and Chair鈥檚 stakeholder engagement and evaluation projects, has developed expertise in engaging and collaborating with patients and other stakeholders.
B. Lebouch茅 is an HIV and HCV Primary care specialist MD, PhD, an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at 不良研究所 (Montreal, Canada), and scientist conducting patient-oriented clinical research with people living with HIV and HCV and in HIV prevention particularly for men who have sex with men. He has also authored/co-authored 77 peer-reviewed publications and 2 book chapters, edited 1 book, and given over 100 oral presentations at conferences, rounds, and community-based organizations. In 2018, he received an award from the Quebec College of Family Physicians for his contribution to research and publication in family medicine.
