High-aspect, extraordinarily delicate free-standing SiN phononic crystal membrane, representing experimental progress toward our theoretical proposal []. With this structure in a fiber optical cavity, we expect that light -- even an average of a single photon in the apparatus -- will act as a dominant structural element that can strongly tune the spatial distribution of oscillating mass. This will provide a new paradigm for mechanical sensor design, and may provide access to exotic quantum states of macroscopic motion.
