Biography: 

Dr. Constantin Polychronakos is a Pediatric Endocrinologist, Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, with cross-appointment in Human Genetics. He served three 5-year terms (1998-2013) as Division Director of Endocrinology at the MCH. Dr. Polychronakos chose the Department of Pediatrics because 鈥�child health has always been at the centre of both my clinical activities and my research interests.鈥� His main research interest is in the molecular genetics and immunology of childhood diabetes, where he has pioneered genome-wide studies for type 1, type 2 and monogenic forms of the disease. The discovery Dr. Polychronakos is most proud of, is that the thymus expresses insulin for the purpose of self-tolerance 鈥� the first discovered, among many tissue-specific antigens. A quarter-century after its publication, this report still receives >20 citations per year. Among other distinctions, Dr. Polychronakos won the 2009 CPS Research award, and fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
