Ben Calman Wins 2022 AAAL Graduate Student Award

Ben Calman, master's student in Second Language Education at 不良研究所, is the winner of the prestigious Graduate Student Award at the American Association for Applied Linguistics. This important award recognizes excellence in graduate student research submitted to the conference.

Ben Calman鈥檚 research explores the intersections of language and race . His master鈥檚 thesis focuses on the experiences of inclusion and discrimination among plurilingual international students at a Canadian university. Through this research, Ben has developed a听taxonomy of raciolinguistic microaggressions听to better understand how ideologies rooted in racism and linguicism co-construct and re-enforce each other. He has also shed light on how听plurilingual international students forge an inclusive plurilingual-international community through plurilingual practices and their plurilingual and pluricultural competence (PPC). Ben looks forward to continuing in this vein of research while shifting the focus onto perpetrators of discrimination to develop better understandings of the biases and ideologies at the root of raciolinguistic discrimination.

Ben Calman's research is being co-supervised by Drs. Angelica Galante and Mela Sarkar.
If you are attending the conference, Ben's presentation is on March 19 (Saturday), 10:35am-11:05am, 17th floor Sky.
Congratulations!
