English-Medium Instruction and Translanguaging
The use of multiple languages may be seen as paradoxical in classrooms where instruction is nominally English-only, such as the case of English-medium instruction (EMI). However, the phenomenon of translanguaging – as a theoretical perspective and a pedagogical practice – in EMI is, in fact, not a new one.
In this presentation, the three editors, BethAnne Paulsrud, Zhongfeng Tian and Jeanette Toth, will first introduce the volume, with its critical exploration of definitions, methodologies, and ideologies of EMI. The volume brings together a number of conceptual and empirical studies on different educational levels, in a variety of countries, with different approaches to translanguaging, different named languages, and different policies.
Several contributors will then briefly present their empirical studies from across the globe, illustrating the complexities of translanguaging through their exploration of the affordances and constraints associated with the use of multiple linguistic resources in the EMI classroom. We end the presentation with an open discussion about how these studies contribute to new understandings of translanguaging as theory and pedagogy across diverse contexts, as well as about the future directions for this research field.
There will be a raffle for an EPUB version of the book.

BethAnne Paulsrud is Senior Lecturer of English at Dalarna University, Sweden. Her research focuses on multilingualism in educational policy and practice, English and English-medium instruction in Sweden, and family language policy.
Zhongfeng Tian is an Assistant Professor of TESOL/Applied Linguistics at the University of Texas at San Antonio, USA. Theoretically grounded in translanguaging, his research centers on working with classroom teachers to provide bi/multilingual students with an equitable and inclusive learning environment, and preparing culturally and linguistically competent teachers with social justice praxis.
Jeanette Toth is currently a Senior Lecturer of English at Dalarna University, Sweden, where she is involved in teacher education. Her research focuses on English-medium instruction, multilingualism, and translanguaging in Swedish schools, addressing language policies, stakeholder perspectives, and classroom practices at various levels in education.
