Program Requirements
The Graduate Diploma in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, in conjunction with either the M.Sc.(A) in Nurse Practitioner; Non-Thesis - Neonatal (for those entering the program with a Bachelor’s in Nursing) or the Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (for those entering the program with a Master’s in Nursing), focuses on the multifaceted role of the neonatal nurse practitioner in a variety of acute, intermediate and critical care neonatal settings, including advanced assessment, clinical reasoning, diagnosis and other skills to enact the full-legislated scope of practice. Students who complete the Neonatal Nurse practitioner program are eligible to write the Ordre des infimières et infirmiers du Québec’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner specialty (licensing) examination.

NUR3 665 Common Procedures in Neonatal Practice (3 credits)
Overview
Nursing Education : Introduction to common diagnostic tests and procedures performed in neonatology. Topics include laboratory result interpretation, x-ray reading, EKG interpretation, and neonatal resuscitation course.

NUR3 667 Clinical Seminar in Neonatal Practice (2 credits)
Overview
Nursing Education : Application of theoretical knowledge to clinical practice by exploring illnesses and diseases of the neonate through the presentation of cases and onsite learning activities.

NUR3 668 Internship in Neonatal
Practice 1 (12 credits)
Overview
Nursing Education : Internship in caring for healthy newborns as well as complex neonatal patients in a hospital setting, and follow-up of at risk infants following hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive care unit in the Neonatal follow-up clinic. Exposure to normal, healthy babies, or healthy babies with problems not requiring intermediate or intensive care, intermediate care patients initially before progressing to cases that are more complex. Application of theoretical knowledge to the care of the neonate in multiple settings, with focus on practice in Level III neonatal unit. Emphasis will be on the transfer of theoretical knowledge and the individualization of patient care. Family dynamics are assessed and considered integral to the management plan.
