SCHOLARSHIPS, PRIZES AND MEDALS IN THE M.Arch. (Professional) PROGRAM
AllÌýstudents are considered for the Scholarships and Awards offered by the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architecture. There is usually no need to apply separately.Ìý
RegisteredÌý Masters students who are planning to pursue doctoral studies and meet the university’s eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply for a SSHRC Fellowship. Information on SSHRC funding can be found at: .
Differential Fee Waivers are no longer offered to Masters students.
A number of teaching assistantships are also offered by the School to students enrolled in the MastersÌý programs. Positions are posted on the bulletin board opposite the reception desk in the main office (Room 201) in late August (for the Fall term) and in November (for the Winter term). The appointment process is handled by the Administrative Officer of the School, in Room 204.
Since sources of funding are limited, applicants are strongly urged to seek support from aid agencies and foreign governments.

Entrance Scholarships
Entrance scholarships are awarded on a merit basis to one or more students entering the undergraduate program.
Peter Guo-hua Fu Fellowships in Architecture
Established in 2017 by Dr. Peter Guo-hua Fu, for graduate studies in Architecture at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. The purpose is to expand students' engagement in architectural design and global urbanism issues via concerted research and design. One or several annual awards will be made based on academic merit to candidates intending to pursue graduate studies at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. Application is open to students of any nationality, with a preference for citizens of China. Value: varies.
Graduate Excellence Fellowship (GEF)
Awarded to recruit high-calibre students entering the M.Arch. or Ph.D. programs. Value: varies.
In Course Awards
In Course awards are given to one of more eligible students after the completion of their first year of study.
American Institute of Architects, a/e ProNet David W. Lakamp AIA Scholarship
The scholarship was initiated in 1990 by a/e ProNet, a group of insurance professionals providing risk management services to architects and engineers. In 1999 the scholarship was renamed for David W. Lakamp. Mr. Lakamp was a founder of a/e ProNet and a trusted advisor to the profession. He left behind a legacy of professionalism and integrity that set new standards in the field of insurance services. The annual award is given to a student who best demonstrates strong interest in practice management. Eligibility: Students currently registered in the M.Arch. (Professional) program.
The Canadian Architect Student Awards of Excellence
Awards are given for architectural design excellence. Jurors will consider the scheme's response to program, site, and geographic and social context. They will evaluate its physical organization, form, structure, materials and environmental features. Each Canadian School of Architecture is invited to select a minimum of two and maximum of four students to enter.
H.L. Fetherstonhaugh Book Prize
Established in memory of the late H.L. Fetherstonhaugh, M.C., F.R.A.I.C., F.R.I.B.A., R.C.A., a former member of staff in the School of Architecture. Awarded by the School of Architecture to the student with the highest standing in the course Professional Practice.
The Dr. Soo Kim Lan Prize in Architecture
Established in 2000 by Arthur C.F. Lau (B.Arch. '62) and Crystal S.C. Soo Lau (B.Sc.'62, M.Sc.'64), in memory of the latter's mother, Dr. Soo Kim Lan. The prize is awarded by a committee of staff of the School of Architecture to a student completing the second semester of study in the M.Arch. program. Value: $2,000.
Wilfred Onions Memorial Prize
Established in 1991 in memory of Wilfred Onions, B.Arch. 1932, by family, friends and fellow graduates in Bermuda. This prize commemorates his passion for sketching and life-long commitment to the profession of architecture, and is awarded by a committee of staff of the School of Architecture to the student with the best single work in the Sketching School. Value: $200.
Norbert Schoenauer Fellowships in Architecture
Established in 2008 through the estate of Astrid Schoenauer, widow of Norbert Schoenauer, and by Jutta Pallos, Norbert Schoenauer's sister. The fellowships honour the memory of Norbert Schoenauer, former professor at the School of Architecture, and are awarded annually by the Faculty of Engineering, on the recommendation of the School of Architecture, to one or more graduate students enrolled in the School of Architecture.
Stuart A. Wilson Memorial Prize
Established in 1991 in memory of Stuart Anthony Wilson by family, friends and colleagues. Stuart Wilson graduated from the School of Architecture in 1943 and taught there from 1948 to 1991. The prize is awarded by a committee of staff of the School to the student with the best portfolio in the annual Sketching School. Value: $150.
Travel Scholarships
Travel Scholarships are awarded to facilitate students' ability to be mobile and learn from a wide range of environments.
Bruce Anderson Travel Award in Architecture
Established in 2010 by Mrs. Bissera Anderson, along with her daughters, Dr. Diana Anderson and Ms. Christina Anderson, and friends, to honour the teaching career of Emeritus Professor Bruce Anderson on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Professor Bruce Anderson, B.Arch. '64, M.Arch. '66 (Harvard), taught at the School from 1966 to 2003, and served as its Director from 1985 to 1990. The scholarship recognizes excellence in the first year of study in the M.Arch. (Professional) program, and is intended to support travel and research in the summer prior to the last semester of study.
A.F. Dunlop Scholarship
Travelling scholarships bequeathed in 1937 by the late Mrs. Catherine A. Dunlop. Administered by the School of Architecture. Value: varies.
Hugh McLennan Memorial Scholarship
Established by the Hon. John Stewart McLennan, Dr. Francis McLennan and Miss Isabella McLennan in memory of Hugh McLennan, son of the Hon. John Stewart McLennan, killed at the Battle of Ypres in 1915. Awarded for travel to the student who has maintained the highest standing throughout professional studies in Architecture. Selection is made by a Committee of Staff of the School of Architecture. Value: $4,500.
Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) - Bourse du Collège des Présidents
Depuis 1987, la Bourse du Collège des présidents est décernée annuellement par l'Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) à un finissant en architecture au talent prometteur afin de lui permettre de réaliser un voyage d'études. Chacune des écoles d'architecture du Québec recommande trois étudiants qui s'est distingué par l'excellence de son dossier universitaire et par la qualité de ses réalisations durant sa scolarité. Les concurrants, au moyen de textes, d'illustrations de budgets et d'échéanciers, doivent démontrer la pertinence d'un voyage d'études et leur capacité à le mener a terme. Le jury, composé de trois membres du Collège des présidents, sélectionne le lauréat sur la base des documents presents.
Wilfred Truman Shaver Scholarships
Established in 1978 by a bequest of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Henley Shaver in memory of her husband. Travelling scholarships, administered by the School of Architecture. Minimum Value: $2,500 each.

Ray Affleck Prize in Design
Established in 1989 in memory of Raymond Tait Affleck (FRAIC, RCA), B.Arch. 1947, by his family, colleagues and friends. Awarded to a student in the School of Architecture for distinction in design in the M.Arch. (Professional) final design project. The winner will be selected by a jury of three members, at least one of whom is an architect outside the School of Architecture. Value: varies.
ARCOP/ALCAN Award
Awarded annually to a student in the final semester of the M.Arch. (Professional) program for a design project demonstrating particular sensitivity to the architectural and cultural traditions of its location. The winner will be selected by a jury of three members, at least one of whom is an architect outside the School of Architecture. Value: varies.
John Bland Scholarship in Architecture
Established in 1998 with a generous gift from a graduate of Chemical Engineering (Class of 1959), from Hong Kong, in honour of Professor John Bland, Director of the School of Architecture from 1941 to 1972. Awarded by a committee of staff of the School of Architecture to a graduating student to support work in China. Value: approx. $4,500
Régis Côté Graduate Prize in Design and Sustainability
Established in 2008 by Mr. Régis Côté and last awarded in 2013. Awarded by the School of Architecture to a graduate student in the Master of Architecture (professional) program upon completion of their studies who demonstrates excellence in design-based research related to sustainable environmental practices as found in their final architectural design proposition. Value: $4,000.
The Derek Drummond Award in Architecture
Established in 2004 by Professor Derek Drummond’s friends and colleagues, the ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Alumni Association, and the University, in recognition of his service to the University as Vice-Principal (Development and Alumni Relations), 1996-2003, the Derek Drummond Award in Architecture is awarded by the Director of the School of Architecture to a student in the professional program who has made an outstanding contribution to extracurricular activities. Value: $2500.
The Ping Kwan Lau Prize in Architecture
Established in 2000 by Crystal S. C. Soo Lau (B. Sc. '62, M. Sc. '64) and Arthur C. F. Lau (B. Arch. '62) in memory of the latter's father, Ping Kwan Lau. The prize is awarded by the School of Architecture to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in the research, site analysis and program preparation for the final design project of the M. Arch. (Professional) Program. Value: $500.
The Seymour and Shirley Levine Book Prize in Design
Established in 2000 by friends and family of Seymour and Shirley Levine. The prize is awarded by the School of Architecture to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence and innovation in the integration of environmental systems in the final project of the M. Arch. (Professional) program. Value: $250.
Radoslav Zuk Geometry Prize
Established in 2008 by Professor Radoslav Zuk, B.Arch. 1956. Awarded by a committee in the School of Architecture for the M.Arch. final design project which exhibits the highest degree of mathematical rigor in its underlying geometry. Value: approx. $500.Radoslav Zuk Geometry Prize
MEDALS
Alpha Rho Chi Medal
Established in 1931 by the Grand Council of Alpha Rho Chi to encourage professional leadership and professional service, and awarded to a student who demonstrates true professional merit beyond the design studio.
American Institute of Architects Henry Adams Medal and Certificates of Merit
Established in 1986 and awarded for general excellence to graduating students in the professional program of architecture schools recognized by the Institute. The medal and certificate are awarded by the School of Architecture to the top ranking student, and a second certificate to the second ranking graduating student.
ARCC/King Student Medal
The Jonathan King Medal is the result of an initiative of the Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC); it is awarded annually by the School of Architecture to a student who has demonstrated innovation, integrity and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research.
Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Medal
Offered to a graduating student in the professional program who, in the judgment of the faculty of the School of Architecture, has completed the most outstanding final design project/thesis for that academic year and who gives promise of being an architect of distinction after graduation. Selection is made by the School of Architecture.
