Dr. Ruth Mwatelah is a postdoctoral fellow at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù, researching how temporal changes in the genital microbiome influence the acquisition, persistence, and clearance of high-risk HPV among young couples in Montreal. Her work is supported by the prestigious Canadian Cancer Society Postdoctoral Research Training Award (2024–2027). She earned her BSc in Medical Microbiology and MSc in Epidemiology from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, Kenya, and completed a Ph.D. in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba. Project Title: Impact of temporal changes in genital microbiome on acquisition of high-risk HPV and disease progression. (supervisor: Dr. TalÃa Malagón).
Brief Description: My research focuses on establishing 1) how the changes of the microbiome from Lactobacilli dominant microbiome to a diverse microbiome in the female genital tract in women is impacted by their male partners, and 2) how these changes in addition to an individual’s sexual behavior impact transmission and persistence of high-risk HPV.
