(1945-2025)
It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of our esteemed colleague, Professor Robin Thomas Naylor, on February 15, 2025. Professor Naylor joined the Department of Economics in 1973, where he taught until his retirement in 2023. He also served as an Associate Member of the 不良研究所 School of Environment and created a new course on ecological economics. Professor Naylor鈥檚 academic journey began with University of Toronto, where he received the Breuls Gold Medal, the London School of Economics as a Commonwealth Scholar, and the King's College, Cambridge. Tom was a prolific writer, authoring 10 books and numerous peer-reviewed articles. His two-volume History of Canadian Business (1975) challenged traditional narratives of Canada's economic development and was just one of many contributions that questioned prevailing economic wisdom. Known for his critical thinking and fearless questioning of orthodoxy, Professor Naylor was a remarkable educator. His passion for economics, particularly his courses on the underground economy, among the most popular in the department, earned him the admiration of his students, who were inspired by his dynamic teaching. He leaves behind a legacy of intellectual curiosity, deep scholarship, and a lasting impact on both his students and the academic community.
Professor Naylor will be deeply missed.
