OUR COURSES

FRSL 105 INTENSIVE BEGINNERS' FRENCH (A1), 6 credits

Prerequisite: Placement test.
Not open to students who have taken FRSL 101, FRSL 102 and FRSL 105.

A comprehensive introduction to basic vocabulary, grammatical structures and speech patterns of written and oral French for students in any degree program who neither speak nor write aÌýword of French and who have never studied French before. Learning to communicate at a functional level in a French social milieu, short essays, cultural readings, mandatory lab practice and conversation class.

FRSL 208 INTENSIVE ELEMENTARY FRENCH (A2), 6 credits

Prerequisite: Placement test.
Not open to students who have taken Grade 12 or 13 French in Canada, or equivalent or FRSL 207.

This one-term intensive course uses a task-based approach to provide students with authentic materials related to Canadian culture and prepares them for real life communication.Ìý Therefore, class time will be mostly dedicated to the completion of communicative tasks which often rely on the use of technology (mobile apps, blogs and other online tools).Ìý This course tackles different topics that students can relate to in their personal, social and academic life, and provides a review and further training in elementary language structures to develop their communication skills and digital literacy in French.

FRSL 215 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 1 - INTENSIVE (B1), 6 credits

Prerequisite: Placement test. Not open to students who have taken FRSL 211. Open to students in any degree program having an elementary knowledge of French and to those who have completed FRSL 207. Not open to students from Québec.

Language lab attendance required. Grammar review, comprehension, vocabulary development, selected readings and group discussions.

FRSL 325 ORAL AND WRITTEN FRENCH 2 - INTENSIVE (B2), 6 credits

Prerequisite: Placement test.Ìý Priority to students who have taken FRSL 215. Not open to students who have taken FRSL 321.

Oral work involving discussion and exposés, cultural and literary readings, grammar review.Ìý Methodological component integrated in classwork and developed in frequent workshop sessions.

FRSL 431 FRANÇAIS FONCTIONNEL AVANCÉ - INTENSIVE (C1),Ìý6 credits

Prerequisite:ÌýPlacement test.Ìý Priority to students who have taken FRSL 325. Not open to students who have taken FRSL 431D1 and FRSL 431D2.

This course is designed to meet the needs of students who already possess a good command of the language and who wish to become fully functional in French.Ìý Enrichment of all four language skills with an emphasis on proficiency in oral and written communication through reading selected literary works, newspapers, and magazines.Ìý Discussions and oral presentations.Ìý Exercises and essays using selected grammatical constructions.Ìý The course will also emphasize contemporary Quebec culture.

PLACEMENT TESTS

Before you can register, you will have to complete the Placement Test. All students (including complete beginners) wishing to take a French course are required to take a placement test.Ìý

The placement test is necessary in order to evaluate the student's level of proficiency in French and determine which course is the most appropriate.Ìý

Due to the limited number of places available, completing the written test early is encouraged.
