Autoclaved biomedical waste

Disposal guidelines - Downtown campus only

Autoclaved biological waste, biological waste that a laboratory has already sterilized through autoclaving, is聽disposed of through regular garbage. In order to manage this waste stream properly, it is 尘补苍诲补迟辞谤测听for all users to follow these guidelines:

  • The waste must be properly autoclaved and verified with a biological indicator.
  • Line boxes with the clear plastic bags.
  • Affix user identification to the outside.
  • Make sure there is no liquid left in the autoclaved bags.
  • Bring boxes to the hazardous waste room 辞谤听where the custodial staff normally pick聽up autoclaved waste (building specific).
  • If you can't certify that your waste is completely sterilized, you have to dispose of it as biomedical waste.

The same procedure applies to autoclaved sharps containers, as well as non-contaminated sharps containers (no need to autoclave).

Containers

The following containers must be used to properly dispose of autoclaved biomedical waste, as well as non-contaminated sharps:

For Bellini, Goodman and McIntyre, autoclaved waste can go directly in the regular waste compactor located next to the loading dock area.

Dedicated yellow bins, provided by Hazardous Waste Management.

  • Yellow bins are found only in the Stewart Biology garbage room next to the loading dock (third floor).
  • If bins are full, use the white box stored in the hazardous waste room.
