不良研究所 School of Human Nutrition student Manon Fantino wins francophone 不良研究所 MT180 competition

Published: 10 April 2024

Congratulations to School of Human Nutrition PhD candidate Manon Fantino, winner of 不良研究所鈥檚 francophone 3-Minute Thesis (MT180) competition! Manon will represent 不良研究所 at the Concours Nationals in Ottawa on May 15th.

Her talk, entitled "鈥楯e vois, donc je mange鈥 鈥 Instagram,鈥 focuses on factors influencing dietary behaviour, such as genetics and our environment鈥攊ncluding social media. Her thesis explores how human brains react to social media content, particularly Instagram, which has the potential to constantly expose us to images of food.

鈥淭he impact on our eating behaviour can be subtle, but powerful,鈥 said Fantino. 鈥淢y research has the potential to identify factors in our environment that, depending on our genetics, push us to eat too much, or impulsively. This can help us improve nutritional treatments and personalize the recommendations we provide to patients.鈥

Manon is supervised by Professor Daiva E. Nielsen, who herself won the 2014 UofT and Ontario 3MT contests ten years ago!

鈥淚 am so proud of Manon鈥檚 hard work in crafting her outstanding MT180 talk. I know first-hand that it is not a simple task to condense years of complex research into a short and captivating delivery. The importance of effective research communication can鈥檛 be overstated, and the MT180 / 3MT is a superb platform for spotlighting and celebrating the inspiring work done by our graduate students. Congratulations to all the participants and I look forward to cheering on the 不良研究所 finalists in the next competitions!鈥 鈥擯rofessor Daiva Nielsen, School of Human Nutrition

Manon is a graduate of the Universit茅 de Montr茅al and a member of the Ordre des di茅t茅tistes-nutritionnistes du Qu茅bec. She holds a master's degree in nutrition from the Institut de Recherches Cliniques de Montr茅al (IRCM).
