The supervision of a trainee requires that the teaching-doctor support the trainee in the acquisition of competencies in their discipline.
It is useful if supervision is done daily聽through the use of聽case discussions and direct observations. If possible, it is important to plan teaching sessions聽throughout the rotation.
Several factors can influence the course of a rotation. The supervisor must be attentive to problems and able to carry out the necessary modifications to improve the learning process.
In the event of particularly difficult circumstances
When a trainee presents difficulties聽during the course of their rotation, the supervisor must evaluate the situation and make the required adjustments. The supervisor is also invited to communicate with the Distributed Medical Education office to discuss the matter further so that he/she can be guided and assisted. This discussion will help establish an action plan in order to aid the trainee.
If the situation does not improve, the supervisor must inform the Assistant Dean, DME or the Program Director. It can, at this time, be appropriate to put an end to the rotation.
The Program Director will inform the trainee聽should he/she fail the rotation.
