Royal Victoria Hospital

The Royal Victoria Hospital was built in the Scottish baronial style and has a number of architectural features that bring to mind a castle. It opened in December 1893 on the southeastern听slope of Mount Royal. Renovation of a separate laundry building to accommodate patients with infectious disease was considered in 1902; however, this became unnecessary when the Princess Alexandra Hospital opened in 1906. A five-story Nurses Residence was built on its western side in 1906. A number of other additions and alterations occurred during the following 100 years, among the most notable of which were the Ross Pavilion (for private patients, 1916), the Woman鈥檚 Pavilion (1926), the Allen Memorial Institute (for psychiatry, 1944), and new surgical (1956) and medical (1959) wings.
Possibly because of its relatively ornate and impressive appearance, many postcards of the Royal Victoria Hospital听were produced in the early 1900s. Publishing Companies often used one of a small number of images, with slight variations in format or descriptive text. A small selection of the MAMM collection is shown here.
