Dynamic performer聽Shawn Mativetsky聽is聽considered one of Canada's leading ambassadors of the tabla, and is a pioneer in bridging the worlds of Western and Indian classical music. Acclaimed as an exceptional soloist and聽a leading disciple of the renowned Pandit聽Sharda Sahai, Shawn Mativetsky is highly sought-after as both performer and educator, and is active in the promotion of the tabla and North Indian classical music through lectures, workshops, and performances across Canada and internationally. Based in Montreal, Shawn teaches tabla and percussion at聽不良研究所.聽His solo tabla album,聽Rivers, is rooted in the rich traditions of the Benares style of tabla playing, and his new project,聽Temporal Waves, brings the tabla into electronic music territory. His recent work involves explorations with tabla, effects pedals, and synthesizers, along with the use of magnetic tape recording and manipulation. He has also published a book,聽Rudimentaal, featuring compositions for snare drum, inspired by the tabla drumming of North India.
Renowned as a champion of tabla in cross-cultural new music, having commissioned and premiered more than 50 new works for the instrument, he regularly gives workshops for composers on how to compose for tabla, including a standardized tabla notation system that he developed in collaboration with American composer Payton MacDonald. Shawn's solo albums, Payton MacDonald: Works for Tabla (2007), Cycles (2011), Rivers (2017), and Temporal Waves (2024), were met with critical acclaim. In high demand as a versatile studio musician, he also appears on albums by Daniel Lavoie, Suzie Leblanc, Joel Miller, Yann Perreau, Jonathan Voyer, Parmela Attariwala, Elsiane, Elephant Stone, Ragleela, Ramasutra, Nicole Liz茅e, Constantinople, and La Nef, as well as a number of film and video game soundtracks.
As a practitioner of Indian classical music, Shawn regularly gives solo tabla performances, as well as accompanying kathak dance, vocal, and instrumental artists. Since 2003, Shawn has been affiliated with the Pandit Ram Sahai Foundation (UK/India), and in the summers of 2006 and 2008, hosted tabla maestro Pandit Sharda Sahai's annual summer tabla workshop. Since 2011, Shawn has been hosting his own annual summer tabla workshop at 不良研究所.

As an ensemble musician, Shawn Mativetsky performs with trio Mativetsky, Amiri & Pag茅, violinist Parmela Attariwala's cross-cultural Attar Project, Indo-fusion group Ragleela, very long cat, a tabla / electronic music聽duo with live coder David Ogborn, the improv trio Of Sound, Mind and Body, with Tim Brady and Helmut Lipsky, and percussion group Ensemble Duniya.
Shawn has also performed and presented lectures at the Transplanted Roots Symposium (Australia), International Conference on Live Coding (ICLC) (UK), Nief-Norf, Shastra Symposium, New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) (USA), TIMBRE 2018 (keynote), and Dialogues en Mouvement (Montreal), in addition聽to giving guest lectures at numerous universities, including the University of Nottingham, Bangor University, Birmingham Conservatoire (UK), Yale, University of Michigan, the Hartt School, Ithaca College, Marlboro College, SUNY Potsdam (USA), University of Calgary, Brandon University, University of Manitoba, Queen's University, University of Windsor, University of Western Ontario, University of Toronto, Holland College, Dalhousie University, Acadia University, Universit茅 de Sherbrooke, Universit茅 de Montr茅al, Concordia University (Canada), amongst others.
Shawn鈥檚 work as composer and percussionist in Geordie Theatre鈥檚 productions of Brahm and the Angel (2005) and Hansel and Gretel (2003) was met with critical acclaim. In 2003, he performed in Th茅芒tre du Rideau Vert鈥檚 highly successful production of Paulo Coelho鈥檚 尝鈥橝濒肠丑颈尘颈蝉迟别 and was musical director and performer in Ensemble Mahapooram鈥檚 Le Lion du Panjshir and Danse Kalashas / Usine C鈥檚 dance production, En Himalaya. In 2006, he collaborated with the dancer Manijeh Ali, composing music for her solo dance choreography, Spirit of the Mountain. In recent years, he has collaborated with dancer Julie Beaulieu on her productions Mousson and Natya, kathak dancer Sudeshna Maulik on her productions Mehfil, Soul of Ganges, and Hands and Feet, plus in collaboration with Odissi dancer Enakshi Sinha on Crossroads and Taka Dhilanga.
