Martel, Ji Zhang This course is designed to provide an overview of basic pain mechanisms and clinical interventions for the management of chronic pain. The course begins with introductory lectures on conceptual models of pain, basic pain mechanisms, and human pain assessment. A series of guest lectures delivered by clinicians and scientists then address the mechanisms and management of various musculoskeletal, neuropathic, and visceral pain conditions. An overview of pain among specific populations (e.g., children/adolescents and elderly) is also provided. Finally, lectures on a wide range of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for the management of pain are offered. This course is appropriate for basic science trainees wishing to gain insights into the clinical aspects of pain. It is also appropriate for clinically-oriented trainees who want to enhance their knowledge base of basic pain mechanisms and/or pain management.
