DMD Program FMD Block J • 1 hour lecture: Basic pain mechanisms by TBA:
• 1 hour lecture: Introduction to orofacial pain by Dr Zovinar Der Khatchadourian:
• DDx and management for pain of odontogenic and TMD origin, neuropathic pain and headache DMD II
• 2 hour lecture: review basic anatomy masticatory system; static and dynamic anatomy.
• Recall basic science of pain alluding to pain mechanisms and pathways as well as central processing of pain and autonomic protective responses. Introduce most common orofacial pain conditions; odontogenic and musculoskeletal pain. DMD III
• 4 hour lecture: review concepts of orthopedic stability and basic functional anatomy
• 6 hour of hands on: fabrication of oral appliance to manage jaw pain. DMDIV Course on orofacial pain DENT 412 (3 credits)
• Recall basic mechanisms of normal pain mechanisms and pathways, normal jaw anatomy and function
• Recognize common temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and differentiate them from other orofacial pain conditions such as odontogenic pain, obstructive sleep apnea, headaches (primary and secondary), and neuropathic. Learn basic clinical evaluation of a patient through history taking and clinical examination. Discuss comorbidities and genetics of pain. Teaching is though didactic and hands on experience:
1) Didactic component is comprised of 26 hours of lecture, one workshop, one small group presentation, quizzes after each lecture and a final examination. Lectures are given by myself and guest speakers with clinical and/or research background within various specialties.
2) Clinical hands on component includes one workshop , one rotation at the AEPMU where students observe and assist me in the evaluation and management of complex cases and two rotations at the undergraduate OFP clinic where the students perform the evaluation and management of cases under supervision.
