Resident Awards for Clinical and Educational Excellence
Best Academic Award
This award is bestowed on the resident who best demonstrates excellence in his or her role as an academic. The resident excels as a scholar and consistently exhibits superior prowess in contributing to the development of new knowledge. This resident is actively engaged in disseminating new knowledge by publishing articles, preparing posters for conferences, and presenting at scientific conferences. This award celebrates residents who are considered by their supervisors as trainees who will flourish as brilliant academics.
Outstanding Senior Clinician (PGY4-PGY5)
This award is bestowed on the resident who best demonstrates superior competence in every aspect of clinical care. The resident shines as a medical expert, consistently exhibits superior clinical knowledge, and has exemplary skills as a communicator, collaborator, manager, health advocate, and professional. This award celebrates residents who have superior clinical acumen (from both pharmacotherapeutic and psychotherapeutic perspectives) and are considered by their supervisors as trainees who are ready to successfully leap into staff hood.
Outstanding Junior Clinician (PGY1-PGY3)
This award is bestowed on the junior resident who demonstrates superior clinical skills for their level of training. The resident is a superior medical expert, consistently exhibits clinical knowledge above their expected level of training, and has exemplary skill as a communicator, collaborator, manager, health advocate, and professional.
Outstanding Leader Award
This award is bestowed on the resident who best demonstrates excellence in leadership. The resident exhibits consistent and steadfast commitment to taking on leadership roles be it within our program, university, province and country, or internationally. The recipient of this award can be an active participant in resident organizations (MPRA, ARM, FMRQ) and/or within the governing bodies related to psychiatry (AMPQ, APA, CPA). The recipient of this award can also be a resident who is deeply engaged in mental health advocacy. This award celebrates residents whose supervisors consider as trainees devoted to protecting and furthering the interests of all residents and of psychiatry.
Outstanding Teacher Award
This award is bestowed on the resident who best demonstrates excellence in the role of teacher. This resident has a superior interest in teaching his or her peers and medical students. This resident has engaged in teaching activities such as becoming a teaching fellow and/or by teaching small med 1 and 2 groups. This resident is also engaged in teaching medical students and peers during clinical rotations and call. This award celebrates residents recognized by their superiors as outstanding and inspiring teachers.
Dennis Engels Award for excellence in Psychotherapy
This award is bestowed on the resident who best demonstrates excellence in psychotherapy. The resident has an unparalleled and keen interest in various psychotherapeutic modalities and also demonstrates superior skills as a psychotherapist in more than one psychotherapeutic modality. This award celebrates residents who are viewed by their superiors as exemplary therapists devoted to helping their patients.
Resident Awards for the Best Scholarly Paper
General Information
Residents will be solicited for entries in the summer and fall prior to Awards Night. Manuscripts may be entered for multiple awards, but each manuscript can only win one award. Residents who are co-authors may share an award. Please note that some awards require that the submission be already published or accepted for publication and confirmation of publication or acceptance is required with the submission.
Chairman's Prize
For excellence in a written scholarly endeavour that is published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The paper should demonstrate knowledge of the area discussed, clarity of outline and evidence of original academic thought. An up-to-date, complete and accurate literature review, as well as discussion, comments and conclusions are required components.
Innovative Publication Prize
For best paper by a resident or fellow, published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Preference will be given to papers that demonstrate innovation, relevance, scientific curiosity, and that open up new areas for exploration.
Gabrielle Weiss Prize
For an outstanding scholarly manuscript dealing with issues relevant to child psychiatry. The paper should demonstrate original thinking and discuss the chosen topic in an academic manner. This may include a critical review of the literature, presentation of empirical data or equivalent material (e.g. clinical or conceptual data), a discussion, and a conclusion.
Geriatric Psychiatry Prize
For the best scholarly manuscript on a geriatric psychiatry topic. The paper may report a case, a case series, a critical review, or original research. The prize will be awarded on the basis of the originality of the objective(s), the quality of the methodology and the presentation/interpretation of the results.
Serge Bikadoroff Prize
For the best scholarly manuscript in consultation-liaison psychiatry. The prize will be awarded on the basis of originality, understanding of the topic and quality of expression. Essential components of the paper include a literature review, presentation of original clinical material or research project, critical discussions, and conclusions.
Note: A resident cannot win the same prize for two consecutive years.
