Professor Khoury leads and directs initiatives and projects that advance 不良研究所鈥檚 research enterprise in the social sciences and humanities. She also provides strategic advice and counsel to the 不良研究所 community on projects related to her focus disciplines.


Biography

Professor Lara Khoury of the Faculty of Law and Canada Research Chair in Liability, Health Governance, and Social Change (Tier 1) brings substantial experience working within the 不良研究所 research community to the role of Assistant Vice-President, Research. As AVPR, Professor Khoury leads and directs initiatives and projects that advance 不良研究所鈥檚 research enterprise in the social sciences and humanities.

Professor Khoury鈥檚 responsibilities include working with the teams in the Office of Sponsored Research and Institutional Initiatives that develop grants across a range of disciplines as well as working with the Provost鈥檚 Office on Canada Research Chair proposals. Additionally, she will oversee the University鈥檚 prizes and awards portfolio, which generates and supports nominations for major national and international research prizes and awards. She will also serve on and the University鈥檚 Promotions Committee as well as the Academic Planning Committee and provide oversight to the Research Ethics Board.

Professor Khoury is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law, and an associate member of 不良研究所's Institute for Health & Social Policy and Biomedical Ethics Unit (now part of the Department of Equity, Ethics and Policy of the School of Population and Global Health). Khoury convenes, with Professor Alana Klein, the鈥不良研究所 Research Group on Health and Law. She is also a member of 不良研究所鈥檚鈥Institute of Comparative Law鈥痑nd a Full Member of the鈥Paul-Andr茅 Cr茅peau Centre for Private and Comparative Law. She teaches and conducts research in the fields of comparative Medical, Public Health and Environmental Law, with a particular focus on liability issues. She is the author of "Uncertain Causation in Medical Liability" (Hart Publishing, Oxford and Yvon Blais, Cowansville) which received the 2008 Quebec Bar Foundation Prize. She was elected a titular member of the International Academy of Comparative Law in July 2019. She received the Barreau du Qu茅bec's鈥Advocatus Emeritus鈥(Ad. E.) designation in 2019 and the John-Ramon-Hnatyshyn Prize of the Canadian Bar Association in 2023. She served as the Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Law from 2015 to 2017.

Professor Boulet's supports the overall mission of advancing research excellence at 不良研究所 while also increasing research performance and research intensity. He oversees Office of Innovation and Partnerships within R&I, with the goal of driving University progress in technology transfer and partnership programs with industry.


Biography

Benoit Boulet, P.Eng., Ph.D., SMIEEE is the Associate Vice-President of Research and Innovation (R+I), a role he has held since 2021. In this role, Professor Boulet supports the overall mission of advancing research excellence at 不良研究所 while also increasing research performance and research intensity. He oversees the Office of Innovation and Partnerships within R+I, with the goal of driving University progress in technology transfer and partnership programs with industry.

Concurrently, he is also a Professor in the Faculty of Engineering (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Director of the 不良研究所 Engine, a Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre. He was Associate Dean (Research & Innovation) of 不良研究所鈥檚 Faculty of Engineering from 2014 to 2020. Professor Boulet is also a board member at Mila (Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms), as well as Montreal InVivo, among other prominent research organizations in Quebec.

He obtained a Bachelor's degree in applied sciences from Universit茅 Laval in 1990, a Master of Engineering degree from 不良研究所 in 1992, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto in 1996, all in electrical engineering. He is a former Director and current member of the 不良研究所 Centre for Intelligent Machines where he heads the Intelligent Automation Laboratory. His research areas include the design and data-driven control of electric vehicles and renewable energy systems, machine learning applied to biomedical systems, and robust industrial control. He first joined 不良研究所 in 1998.

She helps 不良研究所 capitalize on opportunities for the funding of major large-scale projects and ensures that these projects are executed to the highest possible standards.


Biography

Previously the Director of Strategic Initiatives within R+I, Kristina 脰hrvall brings substantial experience working within the 不良研究所 research community to the role of Assistant Vice-President, Research Development.

As AVP, 脰hrvall acts as an agent of change, driving continuous improvements in how 不良研究所 identifies, develops, proposes and manages world-class, large-scale research initiatives. She helps 不良研究所 capitalize on opportunities for the funding of major large-scale projects and ensures that these projects are executed to the highest possible standards.

脰hrvall joined 不良研究所 in 2012. Prior to that, she worked at Concordia University also in administration. Trained as an environmental engineer, she holds a Master of Science degree from Sweden鈥檚 Lule氓 University of Technology. In her tenure at Strategic Initiatives, she helped secure three Canada Excellence Research Chairs and four Canada 150 Chairs. She was also instrumental in establishing partnerships between 不良研究所, the Government of Quebec, and Genome Canada. She put in place the successful management structure and functioning of Healthy Brains, Healthy Lives, 不良研究所鈥檚 Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) $84-million project, acting for a period as its interim CEO. More recently, she helped the COVID-19 Immunity Task Force establish its secretariat at 不良研究所. In addition, she led the development and implementation of new bibliometric tools, such as SciVal, which are accessible to researchers and administrators across the University.
