Imaging Techniques for Field based Plant Phenotyping and Postharvest Quality Assessment

Agriculture is facing tremendous challenges in its productivity, sustainability, and quality from the rapidly growing population, changing climate, and severe shortfall of arable land and water resources. It is imperative to develop sensing and analysis systems for rapid and accurate measurement of plant phenotypic traits and crop postharvest properties. In this talk, Yu Jiang will describe work on integration of imaging and computing technologies to extract phenotypic traits and postharvest properties for improving crop yield, quality, and adaptability. He will especially focus on two areas: 1) characterization of import crop properties for machine harvest and 2) deep learning for plant development analysis. He will conclude by discussing research plans to develop advanced engineering solutions for grapevine phenotyping and grape quality assessment.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yu Jiang earned his bachelor and master degrees in Computer Science from China, and then pursued his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering at the University of Georiga. In the past five years, Yu primarily focused on two research aspects: field based high throughput plant phenotyping and postharvest quality assessment. So far, Yu have published 16 peer-reviewed journal articles (with 4 more under review) and 11 conference proceedings. Yu received several major awards from the professional societies such as the best paper award from the ITSC division of the ASABE. In addition, Yu was funded with research grant (a total of $30,000) in the past two years.
