My research focuses on the mathematical modelling of hematopoiesis using differential equations incorporating delays. I am particularly interested in the dynamic and kinetic feedback loops of the principal cytokines which regulate hematopoiesis. Understanding these is fundamental for inferring the dynamics in the bone marrow, which is difficult to observe directly. We use our models to predict the response of the hematopoietic system in various scenarios including bacterial infection, chemotherapy and peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. We are also interested in using our models to understand the mechanisms underlying dynamical diseases including cyclical neutropenia. We use techniques from mathematical modelling, dynamical systems, numerical analysis and delay differential equations, including state-dependent and distributed delays.
