Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Series

Have you considered entrepreneurship as a career option during and/or after finishing graduate studies? This workshop series provides a crash course in technological entrepreneurship & innovation. You will learn about the Entrepreneurial Mindset, Lean Startup Methodologies, industry, market and competitor analysis, intellectual property, and more. This training series offers great value to your professional development. By understanding the methodologies and tools, you will increase your awareness of the many aspects you will need to consider throughout your innovation and entrepreneurial journey.
There are eight workshops to help you grow your entrepreneurial and innovation skills (*Workshops with * allow 不良研究所 student participants to receive CCR recognition under the personal and professional development section.):
Technological Innovation and Entrepreneurship 101
This workshop will provide an overview of what technological innovation is and what entrepreneurship is, as well an overview of the Entrepreneurial Mindset, the Lean Launchpad methodology, the Business Model Canvas and the Lean Canvas.
Learning outcomes:
- Define Innovation according to the Conference Board of Canada definition.
- Define the Entrepreneurial Mindset according to KEEN.
- Describe the different approaches in the process of innovation.
- Explain the use of the Business Model Canvas and the Lean Canvas.
- Explain the build-measure-learn feedback loop of Lean Startup methodology.
Introduction to Industry Analysis
This workshop will introduce the fundamental tool of Industry Analysis which companies use for strategy development. For startups, understanding the industry is a critical step in determining market entry and market positioning. The Five Forces Framework will be presented and applied during an exercise.
Learning outcomes:
- Explain the impact of an industry from a startup鈥檚 perspective.
- Apply the Five Forces Model.
- Develop strategies to perform your industry analysis.
Market Research and Analysis of Competition
This workshop will provide an overview of the different types of market research, how to analyze the competition, and the resources available at 不良研究所 to perform market research. Our market research librarian Amanda Wheatley will walk us through some of those resources using a market research canvas tool.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe at least two of the benefits of market research.
- Formulate the strategy to identify customer segments and market size.
- Formulate the strategy to perform a competitive analysis.
- Use the market research databases available via 不良研究所 Library.
Startup Law 101
Led by a team of caseworkers from Compass Startup Legal Clinic, this workshop provides startup founders with a clear path through the legal landscape, offering insight on issues such as incorporation, governance, fundraising, and selecting the ideal legal structure.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe the different forms of legal structures for enterprises.
- Explain the process of incorporation and its governance obligations.
- List the different ways to fund a venture.
Foundations of IP and Patent Searching
This workshop will demystify and explain the various forms of intellectual property (IP), namely, patents, industrial designs, copyright, trademarks, and trade secrets, and when they are used. We will then do some actual patent searching with our librarian April Colosimo using the DERWENT worldwide patent database.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe the various forms of IP, their protection, and use.
- Explain the patenting process.
- Use DERWENT to do your own patent searching.
Customer Discovery
This workshop will provide an overview on the customer discovery process and then delve deeper into how to conduct customer interviews and how to iterate on your business model canvas.
Learning outcomes:
- Use the business model canvas or lean canvas as a tool for developing your business model.
- Test your assumptions by applying the 鈥済etting out of the building鈥 methodology to understand your customers, including planning and preparing an interview guide.
Startup Finances
In this workshop, you'll learn how venture capitalists (VCs) typically value an early-stage innovation-driven venture. To do that we'll go through and give examples on how to forecast sales and how to set pricing, how to forecast expenses and how to figure out the amount of capital needed to finance your business. We'll also explore some of the more common sources of cash from both public institutions and private organizations.
Learning outcomes:
- Describe financial modelling for forecasting profits, losses, and cashflows for a startup.
Startup Funding
Now that you have a grasp on how much money you need, this workshop will focus on the "deal". You'll learn what a venture capital fund is, its structure and how they operate, and what venture capitalists (VCs) look for in an early-stage innovation-driven venture. You'll also learn about the typical elements of a term sheet in connection with equity investments and simple agreements for future equity (SAFEs), and caveats when raising money. Finally, we'll explain how a capitalization table works and finish off with a brief overview of minority shareholder rights.

- Describe different sources of funding for a startup, in particular venture capital funds.
- Explain the functioning of capitalization tables.
