Graduate (600-level) courses

Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts and Science undergraduate students must apply to the Faculty of Science to take Graduate (600-level) courses. The following conditions will apply:

  • The student submits the online application (see below).
  • The student has a minimum CGPA of 3.3.
  • The student is in U3.
  • The professor of the course and the department offering the course approve of the request.
  • A maximum of six credits of 600-level courses are allowed towards the degree.
  • The actual course number appears on the transcript.
  • The course evaluation methods and grading standards are the same for all students, whether graduate or undergraduate.
  • The regulations and practices of the Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Arts & Science are also applied to such a course.

Deadlines

It is the student's responsibility to start the application procedures well in advance of the start of term and to obtain the necessary approvals in a timely manner so that a registration permit may be processed before the end of the course change (add/drop) period.

  • The request form AND the necessary approvals must be received a minimum of 5 business days before the course change deadline or we cannot guarantee that the request will be processed before the deadline.
  • If the request is granted after the course change deadline, an application for a late course addition will be necessary. Late course additions are under the purview of Service Point. If approved, an administrative fee may apply.

How to submit a request

  1. Complete and submit the Faculty of Science online form: . Note: If submitting a request for multiple 600-level courses, you must submit a SEPARATE webform for EACH course.
  2. Approval to register in a 600-level course also requires permission from the department offering the course - see below table. Note: the department will generally require you to obtain approval from the instructor of the course before granting permission. It is the student's responsibility to communicate with the department and the instructor to obtain permission.

Faculty of Arts contacts: students who wish to apply for a 600-Level Arts course must communicate with the Department offering the course for contact information.

  1. Request that the Department complete and submit the to confirm their approval (and attest to the approval of the instructor). Note: if the Department is outside the Faculty of Science they may have their own approval process. You must still inform them that you are a Science student and require Faculty approval BEFORE they can authorize registration. If you register for the course without completing the Faculty webform and obtaining Faculty approval, you risk being de-registered from the course.

  2. If you are a Visiting/Exchange student, you must send a copy of your home university transcript and obtain email approval from your home university (granting permission for you to register in a 600-level course). The transcript and approval must be sent by email to advisor.science [at] mcgill.ca.

IMPORTANT: Once a student submits the online request form, they will receive an automated email (from Microsoft Power Apps) that includes a copy of these instructions. Applicants should check their "junk" folder and email advisor.science [at] mcgill.ca if they do not receive the confirmation email within 1 hour of submitting their application.

Decisions

  • All applicants will receive a decision by email (to their 不良研究所 email account).

  • If your request is approved, you will receive a confirmation email that includes instructions on how to register for the course in Minerva.

Contact

  • If you have questions (or if the instructor or departmental approver have questions), please contact advisor.science [at] mcgill.ca.
