Students of trumpet Professor Richard Stoelzel and Paul Merkelo听have excelled听at the International Trumpet Guild Competitions and will advance to the final competition round later this spring. 听Francis LaPorte,听student of Richard Stoelzel,听and听David Koch,听student of Paul Merkelo, have听been named finalists in the International Trumpet Guild Orchestral Competition. 听Benjamin Hare, student of Richard Stoelzel,听is the first alternate for the Solo Competition Finals.

It speaks volumes that Prof. Brian Cherney鈥檚 Canadian Music Concert series grew out of a desire to share our nation鈥檚 great works with his students. While teaching his course on Canadian Music at Schulich, he came up with an idea to make the compositions in the curriculum more accessible to the class 鈥 and this has since become a well-loved yearly tradition.听

In just a few short days,听Montreal opera fans are going to get everything they could ever wish for. As part of Montr茅al en Lumi猫re, Schulich鈥檚 Lisl Wirth Black Box Festival 听is set to present the Opera Binge Festival, which will cram a total of seven operas into the space of 24 hours.
Harpist听Antoine Malette-Ch茅nier, a Doctor of Musical Arts student of Jennifer Swartz,听has won听the 不良研究所听Concerto Competition. 听In the final round, which took place on Tuesday, February 21,听Antoine gave a stunning performance of Canadian Composer R. Murray Schafer's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra. 听听He will perform听with the听不良研究所 Symphony Orchestra during their 2017-18 season.

As a celebration of the 60 years of Opera 不良研究所,听the Schulich School of Music late last month presented a run of Johann Strauss鈥檚听Die Fledermaus听in the Monument National. The opening was a big success, with a fresh array of voices, exquisite Art-Nouveau sets by Vincent Lef猫vre and brilliant costumes by Ginette Grenier. 听
Nick Squire (MMus '08) has received Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for his work as Sound Engineer on the recording of Shostakovich: Under Stalin's Shadow - Symphonies Nos. 5, 8 & 9, recorded by Deutsche Grammophon. 听The Boston Symphony Orchestra was led by conductor 听Andris Nelsons.听

This year, the Soci茅t茅 de musique contemporaine du Qu茅bec (SMCQ) marks its 50th anniversary and Schulich students will be playing a major part in the celebrations. Notably, the 不良研究所 Symphony Orchestra (MGSO) is set to perform parts of Walter Boudreau鈥檚 Berliner Momente under direction of the composer himself on the opening night of the SMCQ鈥檚 Montr茅al/New Musiques Festival 2017.
The winner of the 2017 Schulich School String Concerto Competition is Amy Hillis, a D.M.A. candidate in violin performance from the studio of Prof. Axel Strauss. 听

There鈥檚 already plenty to celebrate during Montreal鈥檚 375th anniversary year, and now there鈥檚 yet another reason: Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has named Montreal the world鈥檚 number-one student city. The global higher education analyst released its fifth annual QS Best Student Cities ranking on February 14, 2017.
Montreal jumped from last year鈥檚 seventh place to overtake reigning champ Paris, now the world鈥檚 second-place student city after four years in the top spot.
Professor Edward Klorman has received the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Music and the Performing Arts for his book听Mozart鈥檚 Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works, published by听Cambridge University Press. 听The annual recognize the very best in professional and scholarly publishing by bringing attention to distinguished books, journals, and electronic content in 53 categories.
