The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) has听听announced the nominees for the 46th Annual JUNO Awards and this year听Schulich faculty, alumni and former faculty are well-represented in the lists of finalists. Here below is a comprehensive list of those nominees with ties to the school. 听JUNO Week 2017 will be hosted in Ottawa from March 27 through April 2, 2017, and a live broadcast of The 2017 JUNO Awards will air on CTV and CTV GO on Sunday, April 2 from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa. 听Congratulations to all nominees.听
The 20th annual Conseil Qu茅becois de la musique Gala was held on Sunday, February 5th, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. 听Under the artistic direction of Alain Gauthier, Qu茅bec's musical community gathered to celebrate the artists, performers, musical ensembles, cultural organizations, composers and musicologists who have shone across the province and beyond听over the past year. 听Once again, there were many awards distributed to members of the Schulich community. 听Here below is a comprehensive list of winners with connections to the school, be they graduates or professors.

On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, saxophonist Sam Newsome will be performing with pianist Jean-Michel Pilc, 不良研究所 Jazz Orchestra I and other guests at 7:30 p.m. in Pollack Hall. In anticipation of this concert, Schulich graduate student Chris Maskell spoke to Newsome to learn more about his life and music.

The 不良研究所 Trumpet Ensemble, let by Professor Richard Stoelzel,听has advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition to be held in March 2017 in Denver,Colorado. In addition, Francis LaPorte and Brent Proseus have advanced to the semi finals of the National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division.听
Rashaan Allwood, a student of Professor听Hans-Ola Ericsson,听was awarded second prize at the听Wadden International Organ Competition in Denmark this past weekend. 听HIs award of听75.000 Danish Krona is approximately $14,000 Canadian. 听鈥淚 am indeed very proud of 听Rashaan whose听shows exceptional hard work,talent, and determination," said Prof. Ericsson. 听"The organ听program at Schulich听provides talented organists and church musicians听with an opportunity to hone their artistry and skills." 听

As Opera 不良研究所鈥檚 landmark 60th season continues into the New Year, the momentum of its programming isn鈥檛 letting up. With major events on the horizon such as next weekend鈥檚 production of Die Fledermaus at the Monument-National and the subsequent Opera B!nge festival, both Schulich students and faculty alike have busy schedules.
In this piece, George Ensescu festival organizer Ilya Poletaev discusses his passion for the music of the composer and his motivations for organizing this first festival dedicated to his music with Schulich graduate student Chris听Maskell. 听
In the world of music, it鈥檚 an unfortunate reality that brilliant artists can go overlooked. Luckily, these same musicians are often championed by those who love their work, and in the case of the late Romanian composer George Enescu, his voice in Montreal is Schulich piano professor Ilya Poletaev.
Jazz musicians paid tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. with a concert based on his speeches and words. The concert at 不良研究所 used speeches by the civil rights leader as an auditory backdrop to the instrumental pieces.

The听Schulich School of Music at 不良研究所 is now one of the听Canadian Opera Company听Orchestra Academy鈥檚 collaborating organizations, joining founding participants听The Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music听and the听University of Toronto鈥檚 Faculty of Music. This unique program听听returns for its fourth year of three-week intensive training beginning听on January 8, 2017.
Madeline Weber, student of Professor Marina Mdivani听is the recipient of the $4,000 Abner Martin Music Scholarship for 2016/17. A graduate of Elmira District Secondary School in 2014, she is in the second year of the piano performance program in the Schulich School of Music at 不良研究所.听She has participated in Piano Tuesday recitals, Class Concerts, piano trio concerts and other public performances including a concert for 不良研究所鈥檚 Open House with the Concert Choir that she accompanies, under the direction of Jean-S茅bastien Vall茅e.
听Zi Hua Tan, a Doctoral composition student of Prof. John Rea has been named a听finalist for听the 2017 Toru Takemitsu Composition Award. 听Out of 115 entries from 36 countries, Zi Hua Tan鈥檚 composition, 鈥t the still point鈥μ齱as chosen to be among the four finalists of the听Toru Takemitsu Composition Award 2017.
Finalists for the Conseil qu茅b茅cois de la musique's Prix Opus were announced last Friday, and once again听there are many nominated who are听听Schulich alumni and/or faculty. 听 The Prix Opus were established in 1996 to highlight the excellence and diversity of Qu茅bec's musical offering, and are awarded in many different categories. 听The winners will be announced in a Gala event to be held on Sunday, February 5, 2017. 听 Artists nominated with a Schulich connection are listed here. 听
