The 听Annual Schulich School of Music Chamber Music Competition took place 听Tuesday, December 6,听in Tanna Schulich Hall. 听Two groups were declared winners and will travel to Europe for exchange visits to conservatories. 听The winner of the听Exchange visit to the Mozarteum, Salzburg was the Milton String Quartet, with members听Roman Fraser, violin,听Ma茂th茅na Girault, violin,听Evan Robinson, viola and听Joshua Morris, cello.
Last month, seven Rice University students traveled from Houston to Montr茅al to expand Rice鈥檚 Gateway Study of Leadership research program听at 不良研究所. Much of the time spent at 不良研究所 was at the Schulich School of Music, where the students met with Interim Dean Julie Cumming, Prof. Simon Aldrich, Director of the Music Entrepreneurship Program, Doctoral student Suzu Enns and several other faculty members including Ichiro Fujinaga and Lloyd Whitesell.
Artist Diploma Piano Student听Alex Soloway has been announced as the winner of this year's Classical Concerto Competition. He is a student of Prof. Ilya Poletaev and was also a winner in 2014 of the 不良研究所 Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Aeolus Trio. 听Soloway has already听performed in Canada, Europe, and the United States, including concerts at the Canadian Opera Company鈥檚 Four Seasons Centre in Toronto, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, and Carnegie鈥檚 Weill Recital Hall in New York.
The Recording Academy has announced the nominees for the听59th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Included in this list were several听nominees from Schulich. 听

You might have held your breath, as I did, waiting for听Ilya Poletaev听to strike the final note of the Bach "Sarabande" encore Wednesday night at the end of his听Philadelphia Chamber Music Society听recital debut at the听American Philosophical Society.
The 2016 edition of the OSM Manulife Competition took place last week. 听This year's categories听were strings and organ, for which the semi-final string rounds took place in Tanna Schulich Hall at the Schulich School of Music. 听The semifinals for organ took place in the 脡glise Saint-Jean-Baptiste and the finals in the Maison symphonique听de听Montr茅al听at the Grand-Orgue-Pierre-B茅ique.

On 听November 2nd, 听Schulich School of Music Theory听Professor Peter Schubert was named the recipient of 不良研究所鈥檚 Lifetime Achievement Award for Leadership in Learning. The award, which was given during Fall Convocation Ceremonies,听recognizes sustained excellence in leadership and innovation, as well as the active integration of teaching and learning with inquiry, scholarship and research.
The three finalists听chosen to compete for the Wirth Vocal Prize this year are mezzo-soprano Simone McIntosh, bass-baritone Igor Mostovoi and bass Jean-Philippe Mc Clish. 听These singers, selected in an earlier-held preliminary round, will each present a thirty minute programme made up of pieces performed in a minimum of three languages and including at least one opera aria.

Robert Hasegawa, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Area Chair for Music Theory at the Schulich School of Music, has received听the 'Emerging Scholar Award' at the 2016听Society for Music Theory conference held in Vancouver. 听His article听鈥淐lashing Harmonic Systems in Haas鈥檚 Blumenst眉ck and in vain鈥 was published in the journal Music Theory Spectrum 37/2 (Fall 2015). 听The Emerging Scholar Award (Article) is given for an article published no more than seven calendar years after the author鈥檚 receipt of the Ph.D.

Cellist Joshua Morris was named the winner of the 2016-2017 Golden Violin Competition held Sunday, October 30th in Pollack Hall. 听Morris, accompanied by Karsiri Laothamatas, performed 听Kaddish, from 2 M茅lodies h茅bra茂ques by 听Maurice Ravel, a work composed by Morris himself, Suite for Solo Cello, and the听听Prokofiev 听Sonata for cello and piano in C major, Op. 119.
