Eligibility criteria and other considerations

To be considered for an exchange program, at the time of your application, you must:

  • Have a 不良研究所 CGPA of 3.00 or greater. You must also maintain a CGPA of 3.00 or higher during all terms leading to the exchange term.
  • Have completed a minimum of 12 graded 不良研究所 credits at the time of application.
  • Have completed a minimum of 24 graded 不良研究所 credits prior to the start of the exchange program.
  • Be currently registered in a full-time Bachelor of Science or Bachelor Arts and Science program at 不良研究所 (with your program(s) of study accurately reflected on Minerva).

Graduating students:

  • To be eligible for exchange, you cannot have already satisfied your graduation requirements before the term of your exchange.
  • Students who are taking one or more courses at another university during their final term WILL NOT be eligible to graduate at the end of that term. Your graduation term will be delayed. Consult with the relevant advisor for more information.
  • Students interested in applying to transfer to another faculty or into Science should be advised that approval for 不良研究所 Exchanges or other study abroad activities will not automatically transfer to your new degree.
  • Students interested in transferring into Science should consult with the relevant advisor in Science to discuss how transferring into Science may impact their study away program. B.Sc transfer applicants should contact mary.gauthier [at] mcgill.ca (Mary Gauthier) and B.A. & Sc. transfer applicants should contact marina.saunders [at] mcgill.ca (Marina Saunders).
  • If you have already applied for or been approved for exchange and are subsequently applying to transfer, you must mention it in the Student Comments section of your request for Inter-Faculty Transfer.
  • Students interested in transferring out of the Faculty of Science should consult with the other Faculty鈥檚 advising office/exchange coordinators as to potential impacts of a transfer.

Application Process

Step 1: Degree planning

Review the Plan & Prepare page! Going on exchange can have a significant impact on your academic trajectory and it is critical to factor in policies and practical considerations when planning your experience. Details like your remaining graduation requirements, course availability and credit transferability are crucial to ensuring a smooth functioning exchange that allows you to progress towards graduation (and avoid unnecessary delays).

It is critical that you be aware of residency requirements for your degree (B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc.) when planning your study away:

  • You must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 60 credits at 不良研究所.
  • A minimum of two-thirds of all program requirements (Multi-track, Honours, Faculty program) must be satisfactorily completed at 不良研究所.

Make sure your Minerva record is up-to-date:

  • Are your programs accurately recorded in your most recent term?
  • Do you have any pending grades (L, K, Spanned course)? If you do, you are asked to send an email the relevant advisor (mary.gauthier [at] mcgill.ca (Mary Gauthier) for B.Sc. or marina.saunders [at] mcgill.ca (Marina Saunders) for B.A. & Sc.) including confirmation of the grades for all course components to date, as well as how much each component is worth for the course. You may provide a screen shot from MyCourses showing this information.

Step 2: Research destinations

See the 不良研究所 Abroad website for a list of 不良研究所 exchange partners.

B.Sc. students Select destinations listed as "Open to all Faculties" or "Science"
B.A. & Sc. students Select destinations listed as 鈥淥pen to all Faculties.鈥 If you are interested in a host university which is Faculty Specific "Science" or "Arts" only, contact marina.saunders [at] mcgill.ca (Marina Saunders) to discuss this partner.
NOTE: the application will not prevent you from selecting partners that are not open to B.Sc./B.A. & Sc. students, so be sure to select a partner that is open to you.

不良研究所 exchanges take place in either the Fall, full year or Winter term. Due to high demand, the majority of exchanges are one semester in duration. Before submitting a Request for a Full Year Exchange, consider the popularity of the host school since these will have limited spaces and students may not be permitted to complete a full year there.

In preparation for your application, review course offerings at the host university. As part of your exchange application, you must submit a minimum of eight (8) courses per host institution for each term you plan to be on exchange. This list of courses serves only as a preliminary study plan to demonstrate that the course offerings at the host institution are compatible with the requirements of your 不良研究所 degree. The courses you list on the exchange application are not binding. These courses do NOT need to be approved on the 不良研究所 course equivalency system at the time of your application.

Note: You can rank up to four choices on your application, so it is important to research multiple destinations.

IMPORTANT: The number of spaces available at each host institution is limited, and varies from year to year. Making a selection on the Minerva exchange application is not a guarantee that you will be nominated to the school of your choice or for the term of study you selected. Due to limited Exchange places, you may be nominated to a host institution or term of study that you did not select in your application.

Step 3: Submit your application

To access the application: Minerva > Student Menu > Student Records Menu > Exchange/Study Away Menu > Request for Exchange

The Minerva exchange application allows you to rank a maximum of four (4) different host universities. Use your 4 choices wisely and make sure you rank your choices in order of preference!

NOTE: the application will not prevent you from selecting partners that are not open to B.Sc./B.A. & Sc. students, so be sure to select a partner that is open to you.

For each of your choices you must provide:

  • A statement of purpose: this statement should include why you chose this university with an emphasis on academic content, not just the city or country. If the language of instruction is not English/French, include 1 to 2 sentences in that language to indicate your level of comprehension.
  • A proposed course list: a minimum of eight (8) courses per host institution for each term you plan to be on exchange.

TIP: Prepare and save your statement of purpose and course list in another application. Minerva will time-out after 90 minutes of inactivity, so it is advisable to have your text/course lists ready to paste into the application to avoid losing your work. Additionally, you may be asked for a statement of purpose again later in the exchange process.

Once you submit your application it cannot be modified. You will not be able to change your choices of partner universities. If you want to make changes, you will have to cancel your application and complete a new one before the deadline.

Full year exchange?

  • You must also complete the webform on the 不良研究所 Abroad website.
  • If you are planning a full-year exchange, it is important that you have discussed with your advisors (program and degree) what courses (required, complementary, elective) you would need to complete in the academic year you are applying for. You may be asked to supply a course plan when your application is reviewed.
  • NOTE: approval for a full-year exchange is not guaranteed and subject to Faculty review and space availability at the selected host(s).

Step 4: Application review

Check your 不良研究所 email regularly to avoid missing important notices about your 不良研究所 Exchange application.

SOUSA completes the first review of your application. Our office will determine whether you meet the academic requirements. Once this review is complete, a Faculty decision of 鈥淔aculty Approved鈥 or 鈥淔aculty Refused鈥 will be indicated in the 鈥淔aculty Application Status鈥 field of your application (on Minerva).

Nomination Level:

If your application is "Faculty Approved", your name will be added to a CGPA ranked list of students that will be sent to the 不良研究所 Exchange Office.听 The 不良研究所 Exchange Office will complete the nomination process using a lottery system. For more information about nominations, please see the information on the 不良研究所 Abroad website. Once you have accepted the 不良研究所 nomination, you will then receive instructions on when and how to apply to the host school to which you have been nominated.

What happens after you accept the Exchange Office鈥檚 nomination?

You will receive an email from the 不良研究所 Exchange Office with instructions on when and how to submit your application to the host school.

Your record will be updated to non-resident status for term(s) you will be on Exchange. You will be billed 不良研究所 tuition for 15 credits that term, irrespective of how many courses or credits you take at the exchange university. As well, if you are already enrolled for courses at 不良研究所 during your Exchange term(s):

  • These 不良研究所 courses will be dropped;
  • Your transcript will indicate "Term Away/Exchange" (for a winter term Exchange, your record will be updated to non-resident status after September);
  • You will not be able to register for 不良研究所 courses in that term(s); and
  • Your 不良研究所 courses will not be re-instated if your plans change (Note: if your exchange is cancelled, you may register for new courses).

Step 5: Safety requirements

1) Complete the mandatory registration of your Exchange activity using the 不良研究所 Student Travel Registry.

2) Complete the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation (you will be automatically registered and notified by Safety Abroad). This helpful session covers practical information related to pre-departure preparations, your time abroad, and your return to 不良研究所.

*Failure to comply with Steps 1 and 2 will result in your Exchange being cancelled and any credits earned during your activity will not be recognized or transferred.

Step 6: Course equivalency request

It is critical for a successful exchange that you plan your course selection and get your courses evaluated using the Course Equivalency System IN ADVANCE. Having your courses evaluated BEFORE starting your exchange program will help ensure you take the right courses and know what to expect in terms of transfer credit and equivalencies towards your 不良研究所 degree. Consult Transferring Credit for full details on this process and how to submit your course equivalency request.

Need to cancel your exchange?

  • Please consult the for information on the cancellation process.
  • At any stage of the application process, you must submit the "" form.
  • If you need additional information, please email the 不良研究所 Exchange Office at studentexchanges [at] mcgill.ca
