Step 5: Budget for your time away
Step 1: Be aware of critical requirements, policies and considerations
Degree and Program requirements:
- Degree residency requirement: You must satisfactorily complete at least 60 credits at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù.
- Program residency requirement: At least 2/3rd of all program credits (Major, Honours, Minor, Inter-Faculty program) must normally be completed at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù; thus, a maximum of 1/3rd of all program credits may be completed at another university e.g. for an 18 credit Minor concentration, you may count a maximum of 6 credits taken outside of ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. NOTE: Some programs may have specific program components that must be completed at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. Consult your program advisors.
Ìý
Policies:
- Students who plan to apply to transfer to another faculty or into Science should be advised that approval for ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Exchanges or other study abroad activities will not automatically transfer to your new degree. You must contact your home Faculty's advising office/study away coordinators as to potential impacts of a transfer.
- Graduating U3 students: Studying abroad in your final semester will delay your graduation to the next available term of graduation. You cannot graduate in the same term in which you are taking course(s) at another university.
Ìý
Considerations:
- International students: Delaying your graduation term can have implications for the Post Graduation Work Permit. Consult with International Student Services.
- U.S. students receiving federal student aid: students who are taking distance education (online courses), research abroad, Official ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Exchange or a Study Abroad program, please review the rules and regulations on the Scholarships and Student Aid website or go to the Scholarships and Student Aid office, Brown Building.

Note: For more detailed policy information see the eCalendar degree requirements (B.Sc. or B.A. & Sc.)

Note: Other international experiences, like Field Studies and ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Courses Abroad, may also be worth considering if you are interested in having an international experience. These programs are run by units outside of SOUSA. Please consult their respective websites for program information, eligibility criteria and application information. |
Step 3: Meet with your advisor(s)
Studying away can have a significant impact on your academic trajectory. You are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with your degree and program advisors to discuss your plans. The following are some questions you should be asking yourself and discussing with your advisors:
- Do you want to study away for a year or one term? What would be the optimal term/year to study away?
- What is the status of your ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù degree and program requirements?
- Are you on track to fulfill your degree and program requirements?
- Which required/complimentary courses have you completed and which remain?
- Can your remaining requirements be completed at another university?
- Discuss elective courses and possible exemptions from specific ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù courses as a result of your exchange program.
- When do you expect to graduate? Will you graduate within the degree time limit?
- If studying away, will you be able to respect the program residency requirement (1/3 credit rule)?
- Will you exceed your minimum credit requirement?
- If your course selection is unavailable at the host university, will you be "out of step" with your program requirements upon returning to ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù?
- Will you have to extend your degree at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù if you don't receive as many transfer credits as expected, or as many direct course equivalences as expected?
Ìý
International students should also discuss the following with International Student Services advising staff:
- Are you on a student visa; and if so, when does it expire?
- Will there be any implications for your student visa if you must extend your degree?
Step 4: Research your destination
While it’s fun to focus on exciting locations and unique cultural experiences, it’s equally important to consider practical factors when planning your study away experience. Details like course availability and credit transferability are crucial to ensuring a smooth functioning exchange that fits seamlessly into your degree progress (and helps you avoid graduation delays).

Step 5: Budget for your time away
Budgeting for a term or year away is a vital part of your preparation. Take into consideration the various expenses related to this endeavour – such as: tuition, accommodation, airfare, medical/travel insurance, passport, visas, and other living expenses.
Depending on the type of activity you are participating in, your tuition may be billed at ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù or at the host university, see the table below for more information:
Activity type |
Tuition Notes |
---|---|
²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Exchange program |
You pay ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù tuition directly to ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù. You are charged 15 ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù credits and related fees per term irrespective of the number of credits or courses you register at the host school. |
Independent Study Away |
You pay the host university’s tuition and related fees. You do not pay ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù fees during this term. |
Inter-University Transfer |
The tuition fees for the course(s) at the host university will be charged to your ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù account. |
Start thinking early about applying for funds to study abroad. There is a wide range of options available to you, but you must be proactive in your research and planning. For example, learn if you could tap into funds through federal or provincial-level government loans and bursary programs, foundations or private and public organizations. Inquire about the various application criteria and deadlines. Check out ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Funding Opportunities!
The Mobility Bursary for Exchanges is available to students participating in a ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Exchange only. The award is available to undergraduate students (Québec, Canadian and International) who have been nominated for an eligible exchange program outside Québec. Priority is given to students who rely on government student aid, and/or Indigenous Band funding, and/or are recipients of aid from ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù’s own Bursary & Loan Program as part of their core funding. Students who are granted a Mobility Bursary can expect a value between $750 and $1500 per month of exchange.
Students receiving scholarships, bursaries/loans:
If you are receiving a scholarship, loan and/or bursary, discuss the financial implications of studying abroad with ²»Á¼Ñо¿Ëù Scholarships and Student Aid Office.
American students receiving federal student aid should review the rules and regulations on the Scholarships and Student Aid website.
